How does Asian Handicap work?

By ProbaPredict Data Desk · Last reviewed

Asian handicap gives one team a virtual goal start or deficit so the draw is removed or refunded. With a -0.5 handicap your team must win; with +0.5 it must avoid defeat. Whole-number lines refund the stake on an exact margin, and quarter lines split your stake across two neighbouring lines.

Why does Asian handicap exist?

Football has three outcomes, and in many matches one team is a heavy favourite. Asian handicap evens things up by giving the weaker side a goal start, and it removes or refunds the draw so there are only two sides to bet on. It became popular in Asian markets, hence the name, and is now offered worldwide.

How do half-goal lines work?

Half-goal lines always produce a winner or loser; there is no refund.

How do whole-goal lines work?

How do quarter-goal lines work?

Quarter lines split your stake in two. -0.25 is half on 0 and half on -0.5. -0.75 is half on -0.5 and half on -1. So with -0.75, a one-goal win pays half your stake at the full odds and refunds the other half; a two-goal win pays in full. These lines exist to fine-tune the price between whole and half goals.

What do we show instead of an Asian handicap page?

We don't publish Asian handicap probabilities. Every match page shows home, draw and away chances, both teams' expected goals and the most likely scorelines. The draw probability alone tells you how often a level-ball or draw-no-bet line would be refunded. For reference, 25.6% of matches in our nine leagues over the last five seasons were drawn.

Source: ProbaPredict analysis of 17,379 matches, updated Fri, 2 Oct 2026. "Last five seasons" covers 2021-22 to 2025-26 (calendar years for the Brasileirão). Scores are after 90 minutes.

Worked example: -0.75

Say a scoreline model gives the favourite: win by two or more 34%, win by exactly one 22%, draw 25%, defeat 19%. You stake 10 at Asian handicap -0.75 at decimal odds 2.05. That is 5 on -0.5 and 5 on -1.

Expected return = 0.34 × 20.50 + 0.22 × 15.25 = 6.97 + 3.36 = 10.33 on a 10 stake, a +3.3% edge against those probabilities. With different probabilities it could easily be negative; the arithmetic only shows how the settlement works.

UK and US terminology

UK bettors say "Asian handicap" or "AH". US sportsbooks usually call it the soccer "spread", written like "-0.5 (-110)". European handicaps (a separate, three-way market where the handicap can produce a "handicap draw") also exist; don't confuse them.

Common mistakes with Asian handicap

How do you estimate Asian handicap probabilities from scorelines?

Any handicap outcome is a set of scorelines. For the home team at -1.5, add up the probabilities of every score where the home side wins by two or more: 2-0, 3-0, 3-1, 4-0, 4-1, 4-2 and so on. For +1, the 'win' set is every home win and draw, the 'refund' set is every one-goal home defeat, and the rest lose. A full scoreline grid such as the one our model builds makes these calculations straightforward.

Our match pages show expected goals and the five most likely scorelines, which give a quick sense of how often each margin occurs. In most matches, a one-goal margin is the single most common winning margin, which is why whole-number lines such as -1 refund so often and why quarter lines exist to split the difference.

Frequently asked questions

What does -0.5 Asian handicap mean?
Your team must win the match by any margin. A draw or defeat loses. It settles exactly like a straight win bet in the 1X2 market.
What does +0.5 mean in Asian handicap?
Your team must win or draw. It settles like a double chance bet (1X or X2).
What is a quarter Asian handicap such as -0.25?
Half your stake goes on 0 and half on -0.5. If the match is drawn, the 0 half is refunded and the -0.5 half loses, so you lose half your stake.
Do you publish Asian handicap predictions?
No. Our match pages show home, draw and away probabilities, expected goals and the most likely scorelines, from which handicap outcomes can be estimated.
