What does BTTS mean? Both teams to score explained
By ProbaPredict Data Desk · Last reviewed
BTTS stands for "both teams to score". A BTTS Yes bet wins if each team scores at least one goal in normal time, whatever the result: 1-1, 2-1 and 3-2 all count. BTTS No wins if at least one team fails to score, so any 0-0, 1-0 or 3-0 result.
How does BTTS work?
Both teams to score is a yes/no market. You are not betting on who wins or how many goals there are in total, only on whether each side gets on the scoresheet. A 1-1 draw wins BTTS Yes; a 4-0 thrashing loses it, even though it has more goals. BTTS No wins whenever at least one team keeps a clean sheet.
- BTTS Yes: 1-1, 2-1, 1-2, 2-2, 3-1, 3-2 and so on.
- BTTS No: 0-0, 1-0, 0-1, 2-0, 0-3, 4-0 and so on.
What do we show instead of a BTTS page?
We do not publish a separate BTTS market. Our published markets are home win, draw and away win (1X2) and Over/Under 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 goals. Each match page does show both teams' expected goals and the most likely scorelines, which together give a good sense of how likely each team is to score. You can browse them from today's football predictions table.
How often do both teams score?
Across our nine leagues over the last five seasons, both teams scored in 53.0% of matches. The Bundesliga had the highest rate (60.1%) and the Brasileirão Série A the lowest (48.6%). BTTS rates follow goals per game fairly closely, but not perfectly: a league with lots of one-sided 3-0 wins can have high scoring and a low BTTS rate.

How can you estimate BTTS from expected goals?
A simple model treats each team's goals as a Poisson process. The chance a team scores zero is e−xG, where xG is its expected goals. The chance it scores at least once is 1 − e−xG. Multiply the two teams' "scores at least once" chances together for an approximate BTTS Yes probability. Our full model also corrects low-scoring results with the Dixon-Coles adjustment, which makes 0-0 and 1-1 slightly more likely than plain Poisson suggests.
Worked example
Our match page shows the home side with expected goals of 1.5 and the away side 1.1. Chance the home side scores: 1 − e−1.5 = 1 − 0.223 = 77.7%. Chance the away side scores: 1 − e−1.1 = 1 − 0.333 = 66.7%. BTTS Yes ≈ 0.777 × 0.667 = 51.8%, so BTTS No is about 48.2%. Fair decimal odds for BTTS Yes are 100 ÷ 51.8 = 1.93, close to 10/11 or -107.
If a bookmaker prices BTTS Yes at 1.80, its implied chance is 55.6%. Use our implied probability calculator to check the margin across both sides.
BTTS vs Over 2.5 goals
The two markets overlap but are not the same. A 1-1 is BTTS Yes but Under 2.5; a 3-0 is Over 2.5 but BTTS No. Combining them ("BTTS and Over 2.5") requires a score such as 2-1 or 2-2, so its probability is lower than either part. See what Over 2.5 goals means.
UK and US terminology
UK bettors say "BTTS" or "both teams to score". US sportsbooks often use the same name; some call it "both teams to score: yes/no" in their soccer section.
Common mistakes with BTTS
- Equating high scoring with BTTS. A strong favourite can win 3-0 and kill the bet.
- Ignoring the weaker attack. BTTS can be no more likely than the less likely of the two teams scoring.
- Counting extra time. Only the 90-minute score settles it.
- Assuming a market exists here. We show expected goals and likely scores, not BTTS probabilities.
Which teams are most and least likely to be involved in BTTS matches?
Teams with strong attacks and leaky defences produce the most BTTS Yes results, because they both score and concede regularly. Teams that rarely concede, or that rarely score, pull the rate down. A dominant side that wins many matches 2-0 or 3-0 can have a surprisingly low BTTS rate despite scoring a lot.
In our model, that shows up directly in the expected goals. When both teams' expected goals are above about 1.3, the chance that each scores at least once is high, and BTTS Yes usually sits above 55%. When one side's expected goals fall below 0.8, the chance of that team scoring drops under 55%, which caps the BTTS probability well below half regardless of how many the other side is expected to score.
Frequently asked questions
- Does an own goal count for BTTS?
- Yes. An own goal counts for the team that benefits from it, so a 1-1 where one goal was an own goal still settles BTTS Yes.
- Does extra time count for both teams to score?
- No. BTTS is settled on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
- Do you publish BTTS predictions?
- Not as a separate market. Our match pages show expected goals and the most likely scorelines, which indicate how likely each team is to score. Our published markets are 1X2 and Over/Under 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 goals.
- How often do both teams score?
- In the leagues we cover, both teams score in roughly half of matches. The table on this page shows the current figure for each league.
