What does under 2.5 goals mean?

By ProbaPredict Data Desk · Last reviewed

Under 2.5 goals means the match finishes with two or fewer goals in total after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. 0-0, 1-0, 1-1 and 2-0 all count. Three or more goals means Under 2.5 loses. It is the opposite side of the Over 2.5 market and wins in a little under half of matches.

How does Under 2.5 goals work?

Under 2.5 is a bet that the total number of goals scored by both teams stays at two or below. The ".5" means there is no middle outcome: either the match has two or fewer goals and Under wins, or three or more and Over wins. It does not matter who scores, so a 2-0 away win counts exactly the same as a 1-1 draw.

Which scores count as Under 2.5?

Six scorelines win, and four of them (1-0, 1-1, 0-0 and 2-0 in some leagues) are among the most common results in football. Our correct score guide lists the most frequent scores in our data.

How often do matches stay under 2.5 goals?

Over the last five seasons, 48.4% of matches in our nine leagues had two goals or fewer. The Brasileirão Série A was the lowest-scoring league in that period, with 55.7% of matches under 2.5. Subtract the Over 2.5 column in the table below from 100% to get the Under 2.5 rate for each league.

When is Under 2.5 more likely?

Matches tend to stay low when both teams create few chances, when one team is far stronger but plays carefully, and in leagues with a low scoring level. Weather, injuries to key attackers and the stakes of the game can matter too, but they move the needle less than people expect. Our model captures the big drivers, team attack and defence strength and home advantage, through expected goals for each side.

Worked example

Suppose our model expects the home side to score 1.2 goals and the away side 0.9, a total of 2.1. Adding the six Under scorelines gives about 63% for Under 2.5, so 37% for Over. Fair decimal odds for Under 2.5 are 100 ÷ 63 = 1.59, about 4/7 in fractional odds or -170 in American odds.

If a bookmaker offers 1.70, the implied probability is 1 ÷ 1.70 = 58.8%, below our 63%. Using the edge formula, 0.63 × 1.70 − 1 = +7.1%. That means the price is higher than our model's estimate, not that the bet will win: Under 2.5 still loses in about 37% of matches like this. Try it yourself in the value bet calculator.

UK and US terminology

UK bookmakers write "Under 2.5 goals". US sportsbooks list it as the Under on a soccer total of 2.5, often shown as "U 2.5" with American odds such as +105.

Common mistakes with Under 2.5 goals

How does Under 2.5 relate to Over 2.5 probabilities?

They are two sides of one question, so their true probabilities always add up to 100%. If our model gives Over 2.5 a 55% chance, Under 2.5 is 45%. That makes fair odds easy to check: 100 ÷ 55 = 1.82 for Over and 100 ÷ 45 = 2.22 for Under. A bookmaker's two prices will imply a total above 100% because of the margin, typically a few percentage points on this market in the closing odds we hold.

Our Under 2.5 page and Over 2.5 page use the same model output, viewed from opposite sides. A fixture near the top of one list will be near the bottom of the other. Neither side is inherently better; what matters is how the price compares with the probability.

Frequently asked questions

Does 2-0 count as Under 2.5 goals?
Yes. 2-0 has two goals in total, which is under 2.5. So do 1-1, 0-2, 1-0, 0-1 and 0-0.
Does Under 2.5 include extra time?
No. It is settled on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
Which league has the most Under 2.5 matches?
It changes each season. The live table on this page shows the current figures; over the last five seasons the lowest Over 2.5 rates (so the most Under 2.5 matches) were in the Brasileirão Série A (44.3% over) and La Liga (47.4% over).
Is Under 2.5 the same as Under 2 goals?
Not quite. Under 2.5 wins with exactly two goals. A whole-number line like Under 2 (an Asian line) refunds your stake if exactly two goals are scored.
