Why do some leagues score more than others?
Playing style, tactical culture and competitive balance all matter. Leagues with big gaps between the top and bottom produce more lopsided scores. Leagues where pressing and transitions dominate tend to produce more chances. Climate and pitch conditions may play a smaller role. In our data, home teams also score more than away teams in every league: across all nine, 1.52 home goals per game against 1.21 away (see home advantage).
How do goals per game relate to Over 2.5?
Roughly, the higher the average, the more matches go over 2.5. But averages can mislead: a few 5-0s raise the average without changing many Over/Under results. A league averaging 2.9 goals typically has 52–56% of matches over 2.5; one averaging 2.5 might have 45%.
Worked example
Suppose a league averages 3.0 goals per game. If every match had exactly that expected total, a Poisson model would give Over 2.5 a 57.7% chance: 1 − (e−3 × (1 + 3 + 4.5)) = 1 − 0.423. In reality, expected totals vary from match to match (some 2.2, some 3.8), which is why our Over 2.5 predictions give each fixture its own number.
How is this data compiled?
We combine every finished league match from our main data feed with five seasons of results from football-data.co.uk, without counting any match twice. All scores are after 90 minutes. The tables recompute from the database, so they update as new results arrive.
UK and US terminology
UK: "goals per game", "Over/Under". US: "goals per match", "totals". The Brasileirão runs on a calendar year, so its seasons are labelled by year.
Common mistakes with league goal stats
- Using early-season figures as the norm. A few rounds is a tiny sample.
- Applying league averages to every match. Team strengths matter far more.
- Ignoring promotion and relegation. The teams in a league change every year.
- Counting extra time. Betting markets don't.
How much do league goal rates change from season to season?
Usually by a tenth of a goal per game or so, which is less than people expect. A single season can move further because of promotion and relegation, rule changes such as longer stoppage time, or chance. The table above shows each league's current season next to its five-season figure so you can see how unusual this season is.
For prediction purposes we don't use league averages directly. Our model rates each team's attack and defence and lets the league scoring level emerge from those ratings. The averages are context, not inputs.
